Louis Renault made vehicles with metal shuffleboard tests, but they do not prove more successful than the wooden pallets. It was then that General Estienne is interested in caterpillar-propellant Kégresse Hinstin pushes André Citroën and install them on the new 10 CV, hoping to solve the problem of locomotion in the sand.
In 1922-1923, Citroën equipped with this system of, Mission Hardt-Audouin-Dubreuil made the first crossing of the Sahara, an extraordinary feat.
André Citroën already dreaming of organizing tours in the desert, with luxury hotels, but it earned him a few disappointments.
Some months later, he organized a second expedition to try to find a better way to go to cross the Sahara. General Estienne calls her son George and Rene are part and run.
